L'Arche Inverness
L’Arche Inverness building communities with people who have learning disabilities in the heart of the Highlands in Scotland. In 1975, L’Arche Inverness was the second of now ten communities to be established in the UK, following the core Christian values of Jean Vanier. The community was founded to help enable adults with learning disabilities to integrate with the wider community and to learn the skills they need to live a fulfilled and happy life – a vision, which at the time, was completely new! In four households and three independent living flats throughout Inverness, we provide high quality care and support to nineteen people with learning disabilities. In our homes assistants live alongside those we support which enables them to share all the everyday tasks and roles and responsibilities of making a home together. At L’Arche Inverness we also have a fantastic Day Service which provides activities, work and training for around thirty-two people from the local area as well as some of the nineteen people we support. Our current activities include woodworking such as kindling and bird tables, candle making in a range of lovely scents and colours, life skills and craft making using natural materials found in our extensive grounds. Here each person is supported to learn and develop practical work expertise and skills for living, including: literacy; numeracy and handling finances; cooking and cleaning; team working and individual responsibility; working with members of the public and so forth. Meeting the changing needs and demands of our community is becoming increasingly difficult due to different restraints and financial cuts enforced across the charity and care sectors. While we continue to focus on providing good quality care to those we support in our homes, Housing Support Service and Day Service we really rely on donations to make this achievable.
